Will Computers Save Us Or Doom Us?
No one can ever doubt that the day will come when computers run even more of our lives than they do at the moment. Currently computers tend to take a passive status in our lives, unless you plug them in and turn them on they don’t do much.
The day will come when computers will be turned on and never be turned off again, they will make sure our fridges are full and our clothes get washed. They will even interface with the hoover to make sure our house is clean.
Computer power is said to double every 18 months, but that doesn’t mean much in real terms for most of us. Think on it this way, the computer that runs a cord blood bank is 10 or more times powerful than the ones that were used to put men on the moon.
So how long till a computer runs your household and will that be a good or bad thing?
In some ways it will be good as it will free up even more of our time to play video games and watch inane videos on you tube. In other ways I think there will be a huge risk involved, just look at the network security threats that already exist. What happens when the computer getting hacked is in charge of your water and food supply?
The chances we are talking about here won’t be overnight they will start at the top and work their way down the financial ladder. The first houses with built in computers are sure to be in the big metropolitan areas such as LA and New York. For a start they would need to have very good access to high speed Internet connections and power.
While the first houses will be exorbitantly expensive that will change as time goes on, the first DVD players cost a couple of weeks wages now they are practically giving them away. The first computer kits cost more than some cars, and you still had to put them together yourself.
So will having a computer control your house be the start or the end of mans freedom?
