Why Silver Jewelry and White Gold Jewelry are Different

Many people who are not familiar with silver jewelry or white gold jewelry will often make the mistake of interchanging the two. However, for those of us who have a passion for silver jewelry or white gold jewelry (or both), the differences are very obvious. In general, many people will not notice the difference in appearance between the two metals because they look similar. However, the manner in which each metal reacts to water, for example, is very different. Most of us know that silver needs to be polished but white gold does not need any polishing. Moreover, silver is a metal that can stain much easier than white gold. Like yellow gold and rose gold, white gold is a far more precious metal than silver.

This is not to say that silver jewelry is any less appreciated than white gold jewelry. In fact, because silver is less expensive than white gold, more people wear it. You will find hundreds more shops selling silver jewelry than white gold jewelry. That does not mean that white gold is not popular, but rather silver is in more abundance and is cheaper. And since most of us are on a budget, we need to make due with the resources we have at hand. And all else being equal in terms of size and weight, you will always find that white gold is more expensive than silver.

Of course, there are many jewelry stores that sell white gold jewelry right next to silver jewelry and platinum jewelry. The reason for this strategy is not to deceive you, but rather to compare the appearance and the price. The other reason is that many people shop for jewelry based on color. Even if the customer knows the difference between white gold jewelry, silver jewelry, and/or platinum jewelry, they may want to compare and contrast each jewelry piece in terms of selection and price.
