Which Type of Walkway Lights are Best for Your Home?

July 5, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Lighting

If you’re thinking of installing walkway lights, you have two general choices. You can choose low-voltage lights or solar lights, both of which are fairly inexpensive and attractive. These are lights that sit close to the ground and simply frame a pathway or sidewalk to make it easy to see at night. They do provide safety for those walking but also provide an ambient glow that can make the surrounding area look very pretty after dark.

The type of walkway lighting you choose will depend on how comfortable you are installing electrical lights, the size of your budget and the size and placement of the path you want to light. Low-voltage lights costs less than solar lights but you have to install the wiring. This isn’t difficult, especially if you purchase a kit that comes with clear instructions. If you’re uncomfortable with the idea then solar lights are a much easier option. You also need place to plug these lights in, so if your pathway is too far away from your house and you want to avoid running extension cords, solar lights are the best choice.

Solar lights can be installed in minutes because there’s no wiring, no need to plug them in and no need to worry about the length of the pathway. Simply push them into the ground where you want them and make sure they do get at least a few hours of sunlight each day. The biggest disadvantages to purchasing solar lights are that they cost more to purchase and they won’t stay lit indefinitely. If the pathway needs to be lit all night or until the early morning hours, solar lights might not be the best choice. Low-voltage lights stay lit as long as they’re plugged-in, so opt for those instead. Solar walkway lights are the best choice, however, for areas that are a long distance from an electrical outlet.
