When To Treat For Heartworms

There is some confusion about the issue of heartworms in general and especially when we should treat for them. Before we ever begin a heartworm medicine though we must get our pet tested to ensure that they do not already have adult heartworms.

As long as they are given the all clear we can then give them a medication so that they can never develop adult heartworms. This means that we will use something like Heartgard Plus for Dogs and give it on a monthly basis.

This will then ensure that our Dogs never get adult heartworms. But it does not mean we stop them getting the tiny worms. There is no way to stop this as they are infected by the bite of a mosquito. What we are doing is giving them a medication that stops these worms living and developing. It is completely safe as they are tiny if we give a monthly treating using Heartgard for Dogs or something similar. This is what all heartwormers do, they get rid of the tiny worms that are got only from a mosquito bite.

So, we should always simply give the medication on a monthly basis if there are mosquitoes in our area. We can then rest assured that our pets will never get adult heartworms that can be so dangerous to their health. If we have a cold winter where there are no mosquitoes then we do not need to give the medication. But this still means we should get a test done before we resume medication in the warmer months. This is why more and more people are now deciding to give a medication every month of the year. It means no check up at the vets and it means we do not have to worry about the chance that maybe the animals did get bitten by a rogue insect that could have been present.
