What You Should Know About Black Mold Removal

February 5, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Home

Removing black mold is something that should be carried out as soon as the problem is identified. In many cases, it can lead to quite severe and long term illnesses and has, on occasion, been thought responsible for causing death.

As soon as the problem has been isolated, the source of the moisture problem needs to be attended to. In most cases, this will most likely be as a result of flooding or a water leak however, it can also occur in areas where there are particularly high levels of humidity.

When removing mold, it is important to wear protective clothing, gloves, and a mask. It can also be a good idea to wear protective goggles over the eyes; though this is something which is really down to personal preference.

The room which has become contaminated should be sealed off as much as possible, using heavy plastic sheeting over the doorways and any other openings such as vents and the like. To ensure complete sealing, these should be secured in place with heavy duty duct tape to ensure the black mold spores do not spread when disturbed.

For the visible mold a sponge and some soap should be used to scrub away. If the area is dry, a light misting of warm water can be used, which will help lift the mold and prevent it from escaping into the air. The use of water should be done carefully however, and only a minimum amount used to ensure the environment is kept as hostile for the black mold as possible.

Once this has been removed, the entire area should be well disinfected. This will kill any remaining spores. It is possible to use bleach to do this, though a small area should be tested first to ensure no damage to surfaces. Alternatively, special black mold removal products can be found in hardware stores.
