What Is A Good Garage Floor Covering
There are four main options you have if you want to cover your garage floor for protection and safety. Each of them have their good points and bad but choosing the right one for your situation can make all the difference in the world when you are working in your garage, whether you are doing car maintenance or woodworking or some other project.
The easiest coating is just a garage floor paint. This is mostly for safety because once the paint is rolled out you spread traction material on top which helps with your footing. Paint will last about a year unless there is heavy traffic and it really doesn’t protect the underlying floor surface.
Another option which is gaining in popularity is floor matting. These are large mats, usually ten feet wide, which are rolled out on the floor. They are nice to stand on for long periods of time but don’t try to do any welding or acetylene cutting because the sparks can burn a hole through them. Also, the seam for two mats is just taped together so if it comes loose fluids can seep underneath.
An old style good garage floor covering is asphalt tiles. These are the one foot square tiles which have been popular for years. The are applied onto a bonding and work well if they are protected but again don’t try to weld or cut. Also, a sharp object dropped on them can cause damage.
The best method for sealing a garage floor is to apply a two part epoxy coating. These are easy to use, you just roll them out with a nap roller after mixing the resin and hardener together. Then before it totally cures spread traction material. This gives a surface which is very hard and durable and also offers great footing if the floor becomes wet. Applying a good garage floor coating is a great weekend do-it-yourself project.
