Under What Circumstances Should I Consider Working With A Surrogate?

If you or your partner has been having trouble with fertility, surrogacy may have been mentioned as an option.  Surrogacy can be a wonderful choice for couples in which neither partner is able to carry a child themselves, or for single people who are hoping to add to their family.  Depending on the nature of one’s infertility, surrogacy can still result in the birth of a biological child, which is one of the reasons that it has remained so popular, in spite of the cost.

Working with a surrogate is an extremely personal choice that is impacted by a number of factors.  For woman who are unable to carry a child for any reason, surrogacy is often suggested after all other options have been exhausted.  Most people who turn to surrogacy make the decision after many meetings with their doctors and after the root cause of infertility has been determined.  Knowing what the issues are can help in determining whether you not you may use your own eggs for the implantation, or whether it would be recommended instead that donor eggs be used.

Unfortunately, the financial reality is often a factor as well.  In addition to the out of pocket medical costs that such an arrangement can include, surrogacy also involves attorney’s fees and agency fees.  In some states, paying a surrogate mother for her time is also legal.  Those thinking about surrogacy should keep in mind that these costs will not be covered by insurance, so all doctors visits and tests will require an out of pocket payment.  Some find the that the costs of surrogacy are prohibitively expensive, and choose instead to work with an adoption agency to add to their family.

Anyone who is thinking about working with a surrogate should allow themselves adequate time to weigh all options available to them.  Surrogacy is just one of many successful methods through which people can add to their family.
