Treatment of Genital Warts
If you suspect you have Genitla warts, you need to see your doctor or go to your local genitourinary medicine clinic (GUM). Whilst there is a cure for genital warts, there is not cure for the HPV that causes them. As time goes on outbreaks should become less, but the virus will always stay in your body. For the treatment for genital warts there are a few options. Podophyllin resin is a liquid that stops cell growth. The resin and podofilox that is a lotion is painted on to the wart by a health professional. It is left on for four hours, and then this is cleaned off. It is important to have a health professional to carry this out in order to make sure no healthy tissue is damaged. If you feel you would rather apply medication your self rather than have the health professional do this for you, then you may be given Podopfilox. This usually comes in the form of a lotion or a gel, it should be applied twice a day for three days. After four days, it is recommended this is done again for three days and so on, in totally you should follow this cycle for approximately one month. A liquid can be used to freeze the wart, using liquid nitrogen, for more persistent warts this may be carried out for 1-3 weeks
In most cases this is enough treatment for genital warts, if these methods fail there are other options which are a bit more severe. In some cases for more persistent warts that are tough to treat they may use laser therapy. Laser therapy uses a intense beam of light, this can be a expensive treatment Using an electrical current to heat up a needle, this is then used to burn the cells of the wart and cauterizes the blood vessels. This procedure is carried out at a doctor’s surgery and an local anesthetic is offered to help prevent pain. The doctor cans perform a minor surgical procedure to remove the genital wart under local anesthetic.
The advantage of going to a genitourinary medicine clinic is that you will have tests for other infections; 1 in 5 people with genital warts has another infection that they are probably unaware of.
Remember if you have a break out, you need to protect your partner from the risk of infection. You can do this by using a condom, remember condoms only protect the parts in which it covers and will not prevent transmission if other areas are affected. Keep your genitals clean and dry, try to avoid using scented soap.
