Audio typing and transcription is when you have someone type out either a recording or video. If you have a webinar, seminar, business meeting or conference then it is always very helpful to have a transcript of it so that you can review what was said more easily. There are both freelancers and agencies that do transcription. The quality of the transcript may vary depending on how good the transcriber is, so it pays to keep going back to the same person if you find someone who does high quality work. However, you should also consider the quality of audio or video that you gave in to be transcribed. If the speaker has a strong accent, or the recording is poor or hard to hear, then it may be very hard to get a totally accurate transcript.

Getting an accurate transcript starts with having an accurate recording. While many transcription companies will transcribe whatever you give them it helps if it is clear as then it will get done faster and be more accurate. A digital audio recording or standard audio cassette is best.
There are even transcription services that will record your meeting, conference or what have you for an extra fee, and this is one way to ensure you get a good quality recording.

Some transcription services charge a flat rate while others will charge based on how long the recording is. It is important to know what you will be charged ahead of time so that there are no surprises; take a minute to see how long the audio recording is, if the transcription fee is by the minute and compare with a flat rate price offered by some agencies to see which is a better deal for you.

Another option is to hire a freelancer. Some do not have any or much experience in the field of transcribing while others have a lot of experience and are very good transcribers. Working with an individual offers a few advantages. One is that it may be easier to negotiate the rates with a person as opposed to trying to do so with an agency or company. Also, it is sometimes easier to work with a freelancer as then it is easier to get ahold of the person doing the work for you; if you work with an agency, it is sometimes hard to get ahold of the actual transcriber to talk with them about their work.
