Tips For Treating Eczema Related Skin Infections At Home

Secondary infections are always a risk when you suffer from eczema. If severe enough, they can cause serious complications and scarring. In these cases, they will typically require a prescription. However, you may be able to halt or reverse the progress of a secondary infection before you need a doctor’s care using home remedies.

A first tip to preventing a secondary infection from your eczema is that your infection treatment should not dry out your skin. Not only is dryness one of the main eczema causes, it can also greatly slow down the healing process. If the skin is too dry, it will not be able to produce new skin cells. The extended healing process will increase your likelihood of infection.

A good way to retain your skin’s moisture is to focus on treating the infection when you wash your skin. Cleansing your skin is an essential part of treating your eczema, to remove dirt and germs. Many people have found that they can treat their infection by adding a slight amount of bleach to their mild cleanser. This may seem unusual, but you are only using about 1/16th of bleach per wash. Bleach is a fantastic way to kill the germs and bacteria which is causing your infection. After you cleanse your skin, just make sure that you follow up with a good, natural moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

Another tip is to avoid using over the counter antibiotic ointments. While these are suitable for treating normal infections, they are not recommended for eczema. These ointments are typically petroleum based. The petroleum in it will not let your eczema heal and may even cause an immune reaction that will make your eczema worse. Furthermore, it may interfere with your eczema treatments because the petroleum will maintain a barrier that your treatments cannot penetrate.

If your secondary infection seems to be spreading or increasing in severity, it may be time to get help. An infection can cause serious problems and may require a doctor’s care. However, if you treat your infection right from the beginning you should be able to avert that trip to the doctor.
