How much do you know about the jewelry that you own? Let’s look at that Tiffany gold pendant with the round pearl.

Pearls have been valued as symbols of feminine purity and charms since as far back as 3500 BC.  In the 19th century, Royalty counted pearls as their most prized possessions, valuing them above all other gems. Since 1837, Tiffany has been the world’s premier jewelry designer and has a rich heritage filled with glamor and wealth, with many of the worlds’ rich and famous women adorning themselves in Tiffany gold, silver or gemstone jewelry.   Innovative designers at Tiffany’s constantly search for new ideas in design, and since the pearl is the symbol of perfection, it would be remiss not to use these delightful natural gems in their work. Nothing says ‘classic’ more than a perfectly formed round pearl.

A spectacular freshwater pearl was discovered in 1857, in Notch Brook, New Jersey and was purchased by Charles Tiffany, who then sold it to Napoleon III for Empress Eugénie of France, in 1860.  This most famous of American pearls became known as the ‘Queen Pearl’. In the Tiffany Gold Medal exhibit in Paris in 1889, pride of place went to Farnham’s Hupa Brooch, featuring fresh water pearls from Ohio’s Miami River.

Long strands made from round pearl ‘beads’ are among the most expensive of all pearl jewelry and can cost more than a million dollars!  Some of these strands can be adorned with Tiffany gold or jeweled, decorative clasps or left to stand alone in their singular beauty. A strand of large, luminous, round pearls from the South Seas, that are uniformly matched for size and color, is a fashion signature of luxury and taste.

Round pearl earring studs are a classic and welcome addition to any collection and Tiffany designers have included these with either Tiffany gold or white gold stems to avoid any likelihood of allergic reaction.

A round pearl can be used in many different ways, from an elegant Tiffany gold ring to a simple Tiffany gold pendant with a round pearl dropping gracefully from the end of a fine chain.
