When homeowners what to take on a home improvement project that requires knowledge of plumbing they should always consult a professional.

Plumbing work is not as easy as many people may think. There is a lot to know, the different pipes that are used for different parts of the entire system should be just the beginning. It is important to know how to connect the pipes properly and how to test the work after it is done to be sure there are no leaks before completing the job. Knowledge of the basics is just the first step and a homeowner should be aware of the details beyond the piping layout.

Clogs are one of the biggest problems a household faces; often you can repair a clog yourself without calling a plumber. If you have a clog in a sink or toilet the first step is to try and clear out the area. Showers often have hair clogging their drain which can be removed with by taking the strainer out and cleaning the hair stuck in it.

If the clog is too deep to simply unclog by taking apart the drain then it’s time to move to the next step. The next thing to do is to attempt to snake your drain; this usually works to unclog sinks and showers. Many plumbers do not approve of using chemicals to unclog pipes but it really a personal preference. A clog in the toilet can usually be fixed by using a 5 gallon bucket because toilets work on a pressure system; but if this doesn’t work you will need a plumber.
