The Famous 1972 Chevy Truck

The 1972 Chevy truck was one of the hottest available. It went on the market aimed toward a more upscale, sophisticated buyer. It also was equipped like few trucks had been equipped before this time. It was almost considered a truck of luxury aside from being a heavy duty work truck.

The famous 1972 Chevy truck was available with an extended bed. It had a 400 Cubic Inch V-8 along with power steering and power brakes. On top of that was an AM-FM radio. The radio used a single under dash speaker, it was not a stereo unit. A heater, and a factory installed air conditioning system were also available. The air conditioner was a recirculator unit. It had an independent three speed fan control and an evaporator.

The truck could also be purchased with tinted glass, heavy duty automatic transmission, with heavy duty front and rear springs. For a sportier look a custom interior was available. The interior included a cloth pleated houndstooth pattern nylon seat cover along with a supple vinyl edging. This was also the first year that offered an attached inside rear view mirror directly on the windshield. Full wheel covers were an extra on the deluxe trucks. The popular ralley wheels were not available until the following year.

The 1972 Chevy truck offered the deluxe fleetside trim which was bright anodized aluminum. This was used rather than stainless steel that had been used in previous years. The anodized aluminum had pretty much been adopted throughout the auto industry as it saved considerable money in production costs.

The Longhorn 133 wheelbase pickup was available in 1972. It came in both 3/4 and 1 ton models. The ’72 had a leaf-type rear suspension. To save on production costs General Motors used the chassis from their 1-ton stepside pickup. The 133 wheelbase made it a natural for the longer fleetside bed.

Restoring the famous 1972 Chevy truck has become a phenomenon for hobbists. They will be around for many more years to come. Some of the trucks fully restored sale for many more times their original cost back in 1972.
