The Evolution Of Lanyards

May 25, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

Lanyards with straps made of string were used to secure personal belongings around one’s neck as far back as the 16th century. Today, lanyards have evolved into the must-have accessories of the 21st century.

If you wear one, chances are it is either a company or promotional lanyards. Businesses supply them for their employees to give them a safe and secure way to carry around name badges, department designations, or door keys. The same companies have them engraved with logos or phrases, and then give them out as promotions at trade shows or regional events, much as they would ball caps or pens. A promotional lanyard can also be used as an affordable prize for winners of employee of the month programs.

A lanyard has numerous personal uses. If one does not nab a free one somewhere along the way, it is an inexpensive purchase. They are handy for securing digital cameras, cell phones, MP3 players, or data storage devices. A promotional lanyard can meet many different purposes and is usually worn around the neck. Others are attached to wrists straps, belt loops or purse straps.

There really are not many occasions that use of a lanyard would not be convenient. A whole cottage industry has sprouted up, both online and off, to fulfill the need. Several Web sites offer customized lanyards, for individual or group purchase. Even though they are available with no imprinting, the sky is the limit when it comes to colors and styles available for corporate and promotional purposes. Both the front and back sides of a lanyard are available for lettering or other art work. The cords can be ordered in different lengths, or materials. One can also add a special guard to make sure a badge or other personal identifier does not get turned around and become non-readable while hanging from the lanyard.

Similar products, which are a variation on the same theme, are the lanyard badges. These are made by using a neck strap to hold a badge holder that, in turn, has compartments that hold even more items, most often business cards, keys or cell phones. These are popular with everyone, including art show attendees, golfers, teenagers, and people with health conditions that may use them in place of medical bracelets. Public relations departments love to use these as giveaways at events such as health fairs, product release parties and department recognition programs.
