The Classic Geo Tracker

February 19, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Automotive

Built in 1988 the Geo Tracker or also known as the Chevrolet Tracker was a small 4 Wheel Drive convertible SUV.  The Tracker was developed by Cami automotive. A collaboration between General Motors Canada and Suzuki.  Built unlike other light SUV’s out there on the market it is on a rugged light truck chasis.

Initially there were 3 models of the tracker, a base hardtop, a base convertible, and a CL hardtop. In 1999 the tracker went back to lightweight automobile type rack that was not as popular with rural and off road customers since the rack and pinion is easily damaged.  This later model was renamed to the Chevy Tracker.

The Geo Tracker was well known for it’s low gas mileage and being a compact off-road SUV that made it so popular at the time. The Geo Tracker was manufactured from 1989-1998 in Canada and then Japan and discontinued in 1999.

The Tracker had a 1.6 L 14 95 HP Engine and came in 3 different speeds. A 5 speed which was a manual transmission, 3 speed and 4 speed automatics. It also came in 2 door and 4 Door, also front wheel and rear wheel drive. It has front disc and rear drum breaks with an anti-locking system in the rear.

With a look that says fun the 4 Wheel Drive GEO Tracker has bucket seats with cup holders in the center console along with the gear shift and emergency break, other options included were air conditioning, 15 inch alloy wheels, premium sound system and power steering.

The rear seat holds 2 people and seat back folds down and the whole rear seat assembly folds forward for storage. The Tracker handles well in traffic because of it’s high maneuverability, parking and close quarter handling are ideal with acceleration and passing ability.

The GEO Tracker handles well on and off road and looks good doing it all. The cost of the Tracker is at the low end off the SUV 4 Wheel Drive market, which makes them really affordable.  And the ease of finding parts for the Geo Tracker makes them easily maintainable. If your looking for fun and affordability in a 4 Wheel Drive then the GEO Tracker deserves your consideration.
