The Causes of Teenage Depression

February 2, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

Depression is a serious problem that affects more and more teenagers every year. Recent reports suggest that as many as 20% of teenagers suffer from a major depressive episode. If left untreated, teenage depression can lead to more serious mental problems down the road, and severe depression runs the risk of suicide if help is not found. This can occur for many reasons.

The teenage years are a time of extreme bodily changes. From the development of unfamiliar hair and smells to the torrent of wild and uncontrolled emotions that come as a result of puberty, it is as if our own bodies are rebelling against us. At the same time, we start feeling all sorts of new emotions that we are unprepared to deal with. And those are only the changes happening inside us. There are a whole world of changes that affect our relationship with the outside world.

It is while we are a teenager that we start taking on new responsibilities for the first time. When we are children, there is little that we need to do besides play, go to school, and clean our rooms. As we develop into teenagers, we take on a whole new series of responsibilities that we never had to before. Jobs, car payments, insurance, and new relationships all add to the stresses that we feel, and they can very easily become so overwhelming that we feel that we will never be able to cope.

When all of these things are combined, it leaves many of us feel not only helpless to cope with everything that is happening in our lives, but it also makes us feel as if our lives are so far out of our control that there is nothing we can do to change it or have any sort of influence. That helplessness creates a sense of hopelessness that causes many teenagers to simply give up. That is why teen depression help is so important.
