Whether you have few stretch marks or many stretch marks, the first thing you want is to get rid of these unsightly marks. There are various methods to treat stretch marks such as creams, lotions, laser surgery and cosmetic surgery. While commercially available cream and lotion are less expensive than surgery, they are also less efficient in removing stretch marks. If you are looking for permanent stretch mark removal, surgery is the best option.

Stretch marks usually occur on stomach, thighs, breast and hips due to either pregnancy or weight gain. They appear as a result of stretching of the dermis which in turn causes breakage in the connective tissue. The final result is the unsightly scar formation which appears as light pink threads running along the skin.

Stretch mark removal surgery can be either laser surgery or conventional cosmetic surgery. Laser stretch mark removal surgery utilizes light beam to remove the areas of the skin that are affected by stretch marks. Once the affected skin is removed, new skin grows and replaces the scar tissue. This is almost a painless procedure; however patient may feel pricking sensation while undergoing laser treatment. In order to completely remove the stretch mark, one may require several treatment sessions. Laser treatment is a very safe procedure.  Some people may experience temporary side effects like bruising, blistering and swelling.

On the other hand, conventional stretch mark removal surgery is an invasive procedure. This method is very effective in treating stretch marks. The surgery removes the affected skin area by a method called tummy tuck procedure and the patient needs to get hospitalized. As this is an invasive procedure, the recovery time is longer. The cost of the procedure depends on the severity of scar formation.

If you want to get rid of stretch marks, consult a cosmetic surgeon to discuss about the specific treatment that is best suitable for you.
