Stock Images for School Projects

Are you designing a poster to use in a school project?  If so, you can add to its appeal by buying stock images inexpensively online, instead of having to draw a picture or take a photo yourself.

Online stock image companies offer photographs, digital illustrations and film footage that ranges in price from $1 on up.  Most companies review each image to decide whether they should be sold on their site, so even the less expensive images are often good quality.

There are so many cool images available, it can be difficult to choose which ones are just right.  However, the online companies have streamlined the process and made it easy you to narrow down your search.  The companies have online search features where you can input what you’re looking for.  For instance, if you are doing a project about computers and would like a picture of a circuit board, just type in what you’re looking for in the search engine.  Hundreds of images of circuit boards will appear.  These will include photographs taken of circuit boards, and they will also include other images, like digital representations of circuit boards and a computer keyboard.

Let’s say that, instead of doing a school project on circuit boards, you’re doing a project on mental illness.  You understand that there is no blood test available to test for mental illness, and you want to illustrate the words “bipolar test” on your poster board.  You are hoping to find a picture of a blood test with a red slash mark through it to indicate no blood test.  By typing in the word “test”, you will find pictures of a number of different types of tests, including medical procedures like blood tests.

Bill Gates owns one of the largest online sites, with some of the most famous collections.  His collections are housed in Pennsylvania, in a cave 200 feet below the earth’s surface in a place called Iron Mountain.  His online image site, Corbis Images, is one of the largest on the web.

Gathering online images and choosing some for your school project can be interesting and fun.  Enjoy.
