When it comes to acne treatment there is no shortage of possible options and many of them are quite effective. Unfortunately, most acne treatments come with side effects that come as a surprise to people who use them. It’s important to understand why acne treatment can lead to certain side effects so that people don’t stop using them for the wrong reasons. If severe unwanted symptoms occur then by all means you should consult your dermatologist to find alternatives. But sometimes you just have to stick with a treatment until the desired effects actually occur.

The first thing to understand about dealing with acne is that there is no cure that works right away for everyone. In fact, most treatments require continued use before side effects lessen and skin clears up. Acne is all about oil production that clogs the pores and results in bacterial build up that causes inflammation. So your acne medication will usually deal with one or all of these factors. Antibiotics can be prescribed as well and these can cause reddening of the skin if you go out into the sun. They can also cause nausea and a general feeling of malaise in the first few weeks.

When it comes to unclogging pores you can expect your skin to get drier as acne medications work to get rid of acne. Some things like Retinol-A are designed to peel the top layer of skin to give you a fresh start. But what also can happen is flaking skin that may become itchy. Even a simple topical cream like Tazorac can give you skin that is drier and red at times. One of the most common side effects that come with acne medication is reddening of the skin. This usually only lasts for a couple of weeks but for some people the result makes them question if the treatment is working. So be aware of possible side effects and know when they are too serious to continue treatment. Sometimes it’s just a matter of perseverance and getting rid of acne is only a few weeks away.
