Safety Tips For The DIY Homeowner

April 14, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Home

When you pay someone to take care of a home improvement project you are getting more than them doing it for you.  You are also getting their experience, knowledge, and skill set.  Doing projects like this is a great way to save a lot of money, but many times we lack much of what the pros have.  For this reason, it’s important to know a lot about home improvement safety before taking on your next DIY project.  It will keep you safe, and make sure that you still have your fingers for the next project!

There are a lot of common sense safety tips like wearing safety glasses, don’t catch a falling saw, wear a ventilator around chemicals, and unplugging the circular saw when you’re not using it.  However, there are some other, more specific tips, that will help keep you safe.

Don’t mess around with electricity.  Most people know how to turn off the power at the breaker, but do they have the voltmeter to check and see if the wire is still live?  If they do, do they know how to use it?  Probably not.  This is one of the easiest ways to get hurt, and simply knowing how to check a live wire can prevent it.  This also includes properly grounding wires when installing new lights, outlets, and other electronics.

Knowing how to use your tools properly can save your butt!  Power tools come with instructions for a reason, so read them.  Even if you’ve used the same style of tool in the past, it’s still a very smart idea to read the instructions on the new one – there may be small details that are different between what you know and how the new one works.  Read up on all of a tool’s safety features and cautions before using it, then practice with it before it’s show time.

Staying safe will make sure that you live to start another DIY home improvement project.  It only takes screwing up once to take all the fun out of it, so do everything you can to prevent that from happening!
