Pearl Ring – An Affordable Substitute for Diamonds

Although not known by many people who are in the habit of being told what is expected and what isn’t in regards to jewelry, a pearl ring is sometimes used as an engagement ring in lieu of a diamond ring. A pearl ring that will be used as an engagement ring is usually set in an ornate setting that can be very expensive depending on the metal, whether gold or silver, and the added natural gems including diamonds that can be inset into the pearl’s setting.

Pearls are natural gems and are cheaper than diamonds since pearls do not require the expensive talents of diamond cleaners and facet enhancing professionals. Natural pearls have a luminescent outer coating called the nacre that comes in layers building the size of the pearl while still in the oyster. A natural pearl has some of the feel of gritty nacre when put in the mouth. A man made pearl is very smooth and quite obvious to the expert pearl fancier.

There are, naturally, other occasions for giving the gift of pearls or a pearl ring. Little girls love to wear pearl rings as they are also a symbol of purity as well as the product of a living organism as opposed to other natural gems that are the end result of natural slate rock formations. The bringing forth of a round beautiful object by a living organism has made pearls the object of rare products for thousands of years. At one time, pearls were used in trade much like money is used today.

Giving a pearl ring is a sign of affection, love and life. Adding a pearl ring to a pearl necklace makes a fine accompaniment and is usually given to young girls and to very old ones. There are many traditions that involve various natural gems and the traditions surrounding the pearl ring are part of those traditions.
