Living With Constipation
Constipation is a lifestyle disease that is experienced by more people who care to admit it. Although constipation can have a wide range of causes, the symptoms can generally be treated by fairly similar remedies. The first line of therapy for constipation is usually some kind of fiber supplement. These can include over the counter supplements such as metamucil or psyllium. Both of these contain what is know as soluble fiber, which works by absorbing water and forming a viscous gel in the gut. This is effective in treating constipation as it allows the colon to resume it’s natural function, pushing through the gel. This type of remedy is considered to be very mild due to their largely plant based ingredients and their natural method of action. Interestingly, most soluble fiber supplements are also good for treating diarrhea due to their ability to absorb water.
If natural remedies aren’t effective, there are still other good treatment options that are largely free of serious side effects. One of the popular home treatments is a fleet enema. Fleet enema is known as a saline laxative. It absorbs by causing the contents of your bowel to absorb more water, making them easier to pass.
This product can cause complications in those with other medical conditions, so if you suffer from kidney or heart disease, are pregnant or breast feeding, consult a health care professional before use. But for most people, occasional use of a fleet enema is a good remedy for constipation. There is also a fleet-branded enema product containing mineral oil, which works to lubricate the bowel. The fleet mineral oil enema is another option worth exploring for serious cases of constipation. Of course, you can administer an enema at home cheaply if you have a basic enema kit. This is the preferred option for those who want to avoid the embarrassment of buying personal products at a pharmacy.
Of course, while treating the symptoms can bring relief it is also important to find the cause of constipation. If you have a chronic or recurring case, talk to your doctor about ways to prevent the condition from ocurring in the first place, so that you won’t need any medication at all.
