Interior Design: Assess Your Home

February 6, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Home

You can’t really achieve any kind of improvement until you know where you stand right now and improving your home is no exception. Most of us do not have the luxury of starting from scratch with a blank canvas and have to take into account what we have.

Walk around your home (or just the room you mean to redecorate) and note down the features and items in it. Which things do you love and wish to keep and which would you rather lose or change? Perhaps you love the solid oak flooring in your living room but the acrylic green carpet in the bedroom has to go. Do you love the color and/or texture of certain things? Do you love and use all the objects in the room?

Be ready to let go of anything (no matter how expensive or who gave it to you) which is not either useful or which does not make you smile when you see it or think about it.

Then ask yourself what you would love to own, what you need and want and what would work well i the room. Make a list, according to your budget, of what you can let go of now (and what you will replace it with) and what needs to go on a wish list for the future when you have the money.

On your list, make sure you have the budget for (or have decided to keep) all the basics for day to day living. You might want a pink shag rug but if you don’t have a couch to sit on then you have got your priorities wrong.

After you find the gaps (both practical and decorative) in your home and your wishes for it, you can start to tick items off your list one by one.

If you are unsure what you like, explore online , local decorating stores and antique shops to get a feel for the kind of pieces which inspire you.
