Installing Handicap Shower Grab Bars
Adding a shower grab bar is a good idea. Not only can this help someone who is disabled, but it is also a good safety feature for everyone else on your household. Most falls in a house happen in the bathroom, so installing a grab bar would benefit everyone.
In order for the grab bar to work properly, you will need to attach it directly into the wall studs. This is the best way to secure a bar to the wall. Using molly’s to install into the drywall behind the shower or bath is not recommended. There is the possibility of the grab bar being pulled out of the wall if molly’s are used. So locating the wall studs is very important and will determine the placement of the bath grab bars.
Where should the grab bars be located?
This depends on what the person needs. Does the person use a shower chair or do they stand in the shower? Are there any limits to their mobility?
Generally you will install a vertical grab bar near the entrance of the shower or bath to assist the person who need help getting in and out of the bath. You can then add a vertical bar if they stand in the shower or to assist them in sitting in a bath.
You may have seen some baths with a grab bar placed diagonally. You need to be careful with this type of installation. The ADA does not recommend installing it like this. There is a chance someone could be pulling themselves up a horizontal bar, but then losing their grip and falling back and injuring themselves.
You should install a grab bar about 36 to 40 inches above the ground. Of course depending on the size of the person and size of the tub and shower will determine the proper height.
You will find shower grab bars in various styles and colors. You are not limited to the bare metal ones you have seen in hospitals. You can find them in brass, bronze and in colors too.
Prices start at about $20 and up depending on size and finish.
Installing shower grab bars is a wise investment in your family’s safety.
