44 Conservative Leaders and Lawyers Disprove Romney Claim He 'Defended Marriage' WALTHAM, MA, Jan. 10, 2007 It includes striking citations from the state constitution and court rulings debunking Romney’s legal apologists’ claim that he opposed rather than enabled homosexual “marriage.” Strenuously avoided by Romney supporters, these citations establish that Romney went beyond his constitutional authority and even the expectations of the radical Massachusetts judges by ordering officials to act as if homosexual marriage had been legalized, though the statute still forbids it. Among the signers, are Paul Weyrich, of the Free Congress Foundation, Robert H. Knight, veteran Washington political activist and a draftsman of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, Linda Harvey, of Mission America, Randy Thomasson, Campaign for Children and Families, Peter LaBarbera, Americans for Truth, Dr. Chuck Baldwin, radio host, columnist, Paul Likoudis, The Wanderer, Phil Lawler, Catholic World News, David E. Smith, Illinois Family Institute, Gary Glenn, American Family Association-Michigan, Joe Glover, Family Policy Network and Bill Cotter, Operation Rescue Boston. >The letter arose from exhaustive constitutional research conducted and analyzed by attorneys such as the author of the blog www.RobertPaine.blogspot.com, who has done more research into the unconstitutional imposition of homosexual marriage in Massachusetts than any scholar in the country. “Mitt Romney’s ‘defense’ of marriage is the most transparent fraud in American politics in living memory,” said John Haskins, a political writer and activist, primary drafter of the letter and a signatory. "The lawyers and law professors covering up for him are among the breed of self-proclaimed ‘constitutionalists’ who accept judicial supremacy over constitutions to an even greater degree than most liberals do. "Many or all of them simply failed to study the Massachusetts Constitution before weighing in on perhaps the biggest issue of their entire careers," Haskins added. "Romney's dog-and-pony show depends on the gullibility and cynicism of a small number of conservatives who have foolishly gambled their own reputations on his pursuasive abilities." Haskins, who coordinated the logistics of getting the dozens of signatures, says the task became easier and easier as ever more leaders and activists were appalled by the legal and constitutional evidence presented to them. He adds that, even with Romney out of office, the letter contiued moving around the country, collecting signatures. "In fact, other prominent conservative leaders, pundits and attorneys -- including some who formerly thought Romney credible -- expressed agreement with the legal proof of his deception, but declined to sign for fear of embarrassing friends who had prematurely jumped aboard Romney’s bandwagon. Others were plainly embarrassed at their own public flirting with a politician destined to go down in history as the Father of Homosexual Marriage” Haskins said. Haskins says the release of the letter is part of an ongoing, multi-stage plan to remove the shroud of deception and disinformation in Romney’s claims about his actions and beliefs on social issues. “Sadly, there is no end of embarrassment and disappointment ahead for those who have hitched their own reputations to Mitt Romney’s Big Lie. Information debunking the Romney deception will continue to emerge. Honest people will admit that the legal evidence in this letter is simply unanswerable,” Haskins said. “It’s about time careerist “conservative” lawyers and pundits discovered state constitutions and defended our form of government rather than spread falsehoods they learned at Harvard and other centers of anti-constitutionalism. At that point conservatives might start winning some major battles,” he added. See the letter to Romney and list of signers Coalition Issues Summary of Legal Proofs Debunking Romney's Claims The joint letter includes the following evidence showing how the court did not and could not hve forced Romney to impose homosexual “marriage”: -- "The Constitution as framed is the only guide. To change its terms is within the power of the people alone." (Opinion of the Justices)-- "an unconstitutional overreaching by the judiciary is an act that is “not only not warranted but, indeed, [is] precluded.” "[T]he people of this commonwealth are not controllable by any other laws than those to which their constitutional representative body have given their consent."
