How to select a toothbrush holder

Selecting a toothbrush holder seems simple enough, right? Just find some cool looking design and check the price. If that’s you, you might want to reconsider because it can affect your health in several ways. Let’s examine some important points to look for when you shop for a toothbrush holder.

The material of the holder is very crucial and ideally you want it to be something hard and smooth, such as metal, glass and ceramic. Porous material like rubber and wood are troublesome because bacteria can cling onto the pores much easier. Even worse for wood, it can rot when kept in wet bathroom environment. Hard, smooth, and nonporous surfaces are much easier to clean. Plastic is another material that is suitable for toothbrush holders as long as it’s safe. Research it to make sure, especially if the plastic seems to have low quality. In general, the material should be non-toxic and able to withstand wet environment.

The next consideration is the shape of the toothbrush holder. Many holders are of the 4 hole variety that are narrow and deep. These work find except cleaning would be a hassle, so if you prefer this design make sure you can tolerate the cleaning effort. Simple shapes such as the ones that hangs the toothbrush, or ones with larger hole are easier to clean. Also, the holder design should be such that the bristles won’t touch each other. This is very important as this would help spread viruses and diseases among your family members.

As you can see, selecting the right toothbrush holder is more than just the looks. You want the material to be hard and smooth and a shape that is easy to clean.
