How To Get Rid of Termites

Termites are tiny, burrowing insects that eat wood and can cause immense damage to a home. Most people are aware of the danger of termites, but they do not know how to get rid of termites.

Using a pest control company is the best treatment option if there is a termite infestation. Unfortunately, over the counter solutions that can be bought by consumers do not offer the same level of effectiveness that professional products do. It is also difficult to eradicate every termite without professional treatment. When contacting a termite extermination company you should ask them for an explanation of what steps will be taken and for an estimate of the cost of treatment. The cost of treatment will vary depending on what needs to be done.

There are several treatment types to fight a termite infestation. The degree of infestation determines what treatment is needed. Termite bait is a popular technique that involves placing termite stakes in the ground every eight to ten feet around the property. The bait station contains untreated wood that is checked periodically for termite damage. If live termites or termite damage is found, the wood is replaced with toxic bait that is ingested by the termites and carried back to the colony to be ingested by other termites. Liquid termite treatment that is sprayed around the house and the foundation is another treatment that can be done if the termite infestation is not too bad. Tent fumigation is the most radical treatment and is used only with very bad infestations. This involves covering the house with a tent and releasing strong chemicals into the tent which will kill the termites. Unfortunately, the home owner must vacate the house for a minimum of three days which can be quite inconvenient.

Most pest control companies will offer low-cost annual home inspections to investigate to see if any preventative measures need to be taken. Prevention is far easier than ridding a home of termites. However, if there is an infestation, call your pest control company as soon as possible.
