How To Get Rid of Fleas

If you have cats or dogs, you may have asked yourself how to get rid of fleas at some point, especially during warmer months. The tiny pests can be difficult to get rid of; and not only do they cause discomfort, but they transmit disease. Always watch your pet for tell-tale signs – scratching, raw areas and black flea debris.

Prevention is better than cure; and most supermarkets and vets sell a range of products designed to either keep fleas away, or get rid of them. A flea collar is effective in keeping fleas away, is inexpensive and lasts several months – the hardest part may be putting it on your pet.

In addition to flea collars, your vet may be able to provide a monthly pill for your pet that will kill any fleas. You can also comb your dog or cat with a fine comb designed to remove fleas from their fur; and all pet bedding should be washed in warm soapy water every week, to remove fleas and eggs.

Simply vacuuming thoroughly and regularly can help to destroy any fleas that may be in your home; make sure you throw away the bag to prevent fleas from escaping. If you take your dog to a dog park, or provide regular interaction with other dogs, be alert for signs of fleas.

If, despite your best efforts, you are unfortunate enough to have a flea infestation, a flea bomb is the only sure way to rid your house of fleas. A flea bomb is a device that is placed in the middle of the room and releases chemicals that will kill fleas and their eggs. Unfortunately, it’s an all day process, as you and your pets must be out of the house for at least several hours while the bomb is active.
