How to get rid of a male yeast infection

June 3, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

Most people think that females are more susceptible to yeast infections that males.  This is because female vaginal infections such as thrush are so common.  However male yeast infections that affect the penis are also very widespread and are caused by the same organism.

The Candida family of yeast (a type of fungus) is the culprit, and in particular the species Candida albicans.  A male yeast infection is normally associated with itching, redness and a burning sensation on the penis head and around the foreskin.  Red, raised sores or a red rash can also be present.  The symptoms can interfere with sex and become quite painful in severe cases.

The good news is that it is a treatable condition.  Check out Fungus Facts for a review of treatment options that are available.  Many sufferers have seen success by applying a topical treatment in the form of an anti-fungal cream directly to the affected areas of the penis.  Others have reported success with home remedies such as yogurt or diluted vinegar.

When applying topical treatments it is important to be persistent and stick to your treatment regime over a period of time.  You may not see improvement immediately.  As yeasts thrive in moist and warm environments it makes sense to keep your genital area dry at all times.

Some male yeast infections are caused by a general imbalance or overgrowth of Candida in the body, particularly in the gut.   If this is the case, more holistic treatments are recommended such as a diet change.  Anti-candida diets normally involve reducing carbohydrates, sugars and yeasts from the diet.   Prescription medications taken orally are also available for more severe cases and for infections that are also affecting other parts of the body.  It is important to discuss your options with a doctor as recent years have seen Candida albicans show resistance to certain anti-fungal drugs.
