Home Based Job Options

February 14, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Business

Many companies these days are outsourcing sales, customer service, and clerical work to other  companies and individuals who specialize in that work and offer a more efficient, scalable, and  economical alternative to hiring “in house.”  The sales and customer service industries are quickly creating more home based jobs but there are other types of work being outsourced to home based workers.

If you have specialized training in medical transcription there are opportunities to work from home as a medical transcriptionist.  This field of work does require certification and many employers require a year or two of experience to be considered for a home based position.  Exercising membership with a local medical transcription association is a great way to find job leads, usually working at a clinic or doctor’s office, but from here you can gain the experience which can then be used to find home based medical transcription jobs.

Many clerical tasks such as data entry, website maintenance, and bookkeeping are outsourced to those with experience working in an office or as an administrative assistant.  If you have such experience, marketing yourself as a virtual assistant will allow you to do such work from home.  This field is fairly competitive, and you may have to hire with several clients to fill up your schedule.  Being a virtual assistant is best approached as a business where you are the owner and the service, and making connections at your local Chamber of Commerce, marketing to business on and off line, and announcing your services in some of the online forums are a few good ways to find work.

The number of non-sales or customer service home based jobs is small but growing.  If you have a job already, speak with your employer to see if you can transition to doing your job from home.  By doing a search for home based jobs you will find a few webpages devoted to connecting people with home based job opportunities, though some charge a membership fee.  Beware of those opportunities that claim you can do typing or data entry from home with no experience necessary since most of these are actually marketing opportunities for making money with Google adsense or adwords, and some may even be scams.  Finally, you can always turn a hobby or work that you already do, such as dog care, printing t-shirts, or cooking into a home based job.  It will be more of a business, but work that you enjoy, do from home, and make money with nevertheless.
