Garage Floor Make-Over

June 5, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

The garage is probably the most difficult room in the house to clean. Not only because of all the chemicals and compounds from vehicles that spill on the garage floor, but because it usually ends up as the collecting all of things that have either been put aside for future use, or those that are not used regularly such as lawn mowers, gardening tools, high powered equipment like a chainsaw, and sometimes even the barbecue grill!

If you want to protect the floor of your garage, then you will have to install a floor covering. It is going to cost you some money, depending on what type of covering you choose. But a severely damaged floor in the future is going to cost you more. A flooring project need not disturb your hectic schedule as it can be done during the weekend. It can be a DIY flooring project or with the help of the professionals.

If you intend to undertake the assignment yourself, make sure that you prepare the floor surface. First, it has to be very clean. Scrub it using a strong detergent soap and get rid of the removable stains. If there are hairline cracks, then they need to be filled with caulk. The larger cracks can be patched with concrete patch products.

When painting, the best profile for the floor is similar to that of an average sand paper. To achieve this, the floor should be set using an acid etcher. After the etching is done, the whole area must be washed meticulously to eliminate any of the acid. If the smell of the acid etcher is too strong, ammonia diluted with water can be used to neutralize the odor.

If you opt to use floor stain, test the floor for the presence of a sealer. Sprinkle a few drops of water, if it soaks in, then the floor has not be sealed. But if the water beads up, then that means the floor has been applied with a sealer. In which case, you cannot stain a sealed floor.

There are many ways to improve the general appearance of the garage. One is by paying attention to the concrete floor. The homeowner can either use paint, epoxy coating, mats or tiles to shield the floor from chemical corrosion and other form of damages and also to give the floor some style. There is a lot of available information online that can help you decide. Floors-web.com has interesting articles about concrete floors and various coverings.

The market has made it possible for homeowners to choose the covering that would serve their needs. The options are so numerous, and the designs available are limited only by your imagination.
