Fish Aquarium Tank Tips

Are you thinking of getting a fish aquarium tank? Folks around the globe are enjoying having tropical fish in their homes. The keeping of tropical fish for personal enjoyment dates back to ancient China and Egypt. Tropical fish are fish that originated in warm waters and their fish tank environment must include warm temperatures.  Freshwater tropical fish require a tank temperature of around 76-80 degrees Fahrenheit.

A fish tank can be as small as one liter and as large as the publicly seen aquaria holding millions of gallons of water.  The public aquariums and larger home aquariums are not prone to sudden changes in temperature or pH.  Their larger volume resists changes in ambient temperature, which would have more affect on a smaller aquarium.  The classical goldfish bowl type aquarium is generally considered as unacceptable for keeping fish.

Advances in the fish aquarium tank design now include three types of filtration. They are mechanical, biological, and chemical.  Mechanical filtration removes solid particles from the water and takes some of the load of the other two types of filters.

Friendly bacteria that break down waste material accomplish biological filtration. This type of filtration typically takes place in a sponge, which contains the bacteria. Cleaning of the sponge should be done with a gentle rinse, which does not remove all the bacteria.

Adsorptive media such as activated carbon will remove toxins and tank medications. The pump pushes water through the carbon, which is highly porous and adsorbs a large variety of harmful substances.

The fish aquarium tank heater plays an important role. A temperature that does not fluctuate is important for the health of the fish. This can be accomplished several ways. The most widely used heater is a glass tube containing the temperature sensor, heating element, and thermostat. They come in many sizes to accommodate various sized tanks.  Another common type of heater works in a similar manor except that the thermostat is outside the tank.

Filtration and heating go a long way towards providing a friendly environment for your fish.
