Finding Termite Shelter Tubes

April 24, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

Termite shelter tubes are commonly referred to as either mud tubes or simply termite tubes. They offer the protection of below ground conditions for the termites while they travel above ground. Termites build these tubes in a fairly short amount of time and can measure approximately 1/8 to 1 inch in diameter. Termite shelter tubes can measure a small distance of just a few inches or may measure several yards, depending on their destination.

Termite tubes can be found in almost any climate or location leading to a wood source. The termites use these shelter tubes as a safe passage to their destination, safe from the above ground environment and predators. When inspecting for termite infestation, simply look around the foundations of any building or structure for a mud trail leading from the ground to the wood source. They can be formed horizontally or even vertically, depending on the source of the wood.

They can also be located on the inside of your building or structure. They can be formed in the same way, either horizontally along the ground or vertically from the ceiling. They will use the eaten wood to form these shelter tubes while traveling.
These tubes are not only found around a dwelling or structure. They can also be located in the forest or woods wherever is needed. You might notice what appears to be mud hanging on a tree branch or a bush. This is actually the mud tubes for the termites. They use these shelter tubes as homes for safety while devouring the wood on the tree or bush.

If you suspect termites around your home, inspect for these termite shelter tubes. If you do notice them, immediately contact your local termite exterminator for assistance. These termites can cause mass damage in a short amount of time if left untreated.
