Find a Makeup Tutorial That’s Right for You

July 15, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

Makeup is a very personal thing, so a makeup tutorial that’s very rigid and doesn’t offer any options won’t work for every woman. It’s easy to find makeup tutorials online for everyone from teenagers experimenting with cosmetics for the first time to professional drag queens who use videos to demonstrate how to get that dramatic, high-end look. You can get a free makeup tutorial complete with a demonstration at some department store cosmetic counters, as well as purchase books and DVDs on how to apply makeup perfectly.

The problem with many of these, especially online, is that they don’t take the individual into account. For instance, a makeup tutorial designed to help you learn how to apply foundation and shading properly won’t be demonstrating the right technique for you unless your face is shaped exactly like the person in the tutorial. If your eyes are blue and hers are brown, you won’t want to use the same colors. Skin tone, eye and lip shape, hairline, hair color, undertones and many other factors play a part in how makeup should be applied to your face. Good makeup tutorials take all those things into consideration.

Face

The shape of the face has a lot to do with how to apply blush and shading. While the standard rules for blush (apples of the cheeks, forehead, chin) might apply for certain face shapes, others might look even longer or rounder with those tips. Look for tutorials that give different advice for different shapes. Also, there should be a mention of different skin tones and shades, and dryness or oiliness of the skin so that you choose the right product. Someone with dry skin shouldn’t use powder; someone with oily skin shouldn’t use liquid. If the steps don’t give options, the tutorial probably isn’t the right one for you.

Lips

Makeup tutorials that tell you to line your lips just outside your lip line a shade darker than your lipstick, then fill your lips in and blend might be great for wedding makeup, evening wear or experimentation. But most people don’t want lips quite that dressed up for every day. Look for mentions of things like the shape of the mouth, how to make one lip look fuller while minimizing the other, skin tone and lip color, and other hints at individual choices and differences.

Eyes

There are so many different ways to apply eye makeup, that one tutorial can’t possibly cover them all. But a good eye makeup tutorial should have different techniques for different shapes of eyes, different color palettes for different eye colors, and eye makeup tips for things like how to use both pencil and liquid liner, and how to shape your eyebrow to enhance your eyes naturally.

Other factors come into play, like your hair color, the shape of your hairline (when you pull your hair back), the colors you like to dress in, the season, and a variety of things that can affect which cosmetics you choose and how you put them on. Look for makeup tutorials that have a variety of options to help you learn the best way to apply makeup to your unique features.
