Fear of Heroin Detox

Heroin Addiction

Heroin addiction, depending on degree, can be life threatening. Heroin addicts often fear detox, imagining withdrawal symptoms are painful in the first days of treatment. For this reason, heroin addicts defer to methadone, a synthetic drug, to reduce addiction. Heroin detox requires professional oversight in various stages of addiction. The age of the addict also affects outcomes of detoxification but the fear of heroin detox is what prevents the addict from getting help.

Detoxifying The Body of Heroin

When human bodies become subjected to daily heroin use, dependency grows to the point where it affects mental acuity and becomes physically debilitating to users. As in the case of most addictions, the cure may appear more frightening than the addiction. Long-term heroin addicts acknowledge levels of dependency of their addiction and affect on mental health. Addicts who manage heroin addictions long-term choose to ignore the physical damage to their vital organs and the effect on their brain and refuse heroin detox options.

Detoxification Centers

Help is available through many government programs for heroin addicts who wish to enter into rehabilitation treatment for their addiction. A careful, professional program with medical oversight allows the detoxification to be less fearsome. In addition, many detox centers offer mental health counseling in addition to assisting their patients while in rehabilitation programs. Most addicts find that the combined physical and mental support helps them make a less painful recovery than if they were to attempt heroin detox of their own volition.

From Addiction to Mental Health

An often overlooked issue with heroin addicts is their inability to readjust to their former life status without dependency. Clearly, this is an indication of the need for behavioral readjustment which is part of the mental health programs offered in detox centers. By overcoming their fear of life without heroin, addicts learn to restabilize their sense of self-esteem by sharing their thoughts and ideas in group therapy with other addicts. Intervention is another method of heroin detox that has been used with success.
