Expand Your Desert Landscape Design With Container Gardens

July 8, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

From their early days during the time of the Egyptians to 1950s southern California, where they re-popularized, the method of gardening in pots, containers, and just about anything that would hold a plant has come a long way. The process of raising plants in containers offers some of the most versatile options in gardening, so it is no wonder that it is currently spreading like wild fire.

It is a struggle to bring desert landscape designs to life for many desert homeowners. This is especially true for homeowners who have small yards which give them little space to create a big and beautiful desert landscape design. Container gardens have given many of these desert homeowners a great way to bring some much needed color and plant life into their homes, as well as into their outside environments.

Some homeowners have even managed to grow plants that wouldn’t normally survive in a desert landscape design. Since they have control over the potting soil, fertilizer, and amount of water that goes into the container gardens, this has given them many options that they wouldn’t have had before. Container gardens are also cool because you can put plants into just about anything. You can get creative and start finding old items you do not use that might work well as a makeshift container for plants, like an old high-laced boot, for example.

Starting your first container garden is actually super simple. You just need to choose a container, a plant, and good potting soil. There are many tips online that will walk you through setting up your first container garden, as well. Once you have it all set up there are some important tips you should follow to make sure that your container gardens thrive.

  • First, there is no need to be afraid that you will over water plants that live in a container garden. Be forewarned that they will actually need to be watered more often because they are in containers. With smaller containers you will need to water your plants even more frequently.
  • Do not crowd plants into containers. If you do this then your plants will be fighting over a limited amount of resources. Remember that in a container there is a finite amount of nutrients and water.
  • To be safe, especially if you are starting on your first container garden, you will definitely need to splurge and buy good potting soil. You need a soil that drains well but stays moist so that your plant’s roots will always be damp.
  • To make your life easier, you might also want to start out with a slow release fertilizer, otherwise you will just have to add fertilizer regularly. Since you have to water container gardens often, the nutrients in the pot tend to wash away faster. Because of this you need to replenish the nutrients often.

Following these simple tips will lead you to container garden success. You can have plants lining your front porch and windowsills, as well as having plants that  surround the edge of your home. Try various containers and plants and soon enough you will have a gorgeous set of container plants to beautify the inside or outside of your home.
