Does Your Dental Insurance Cover Braces Too?

July 10, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

Health insurance plans usually cover the basic health needs but some of them also cover routine dental procedures. The only problem is that the dental plans offered within the major medical plans only covers basic fillings and routine cleanings. They don’t usually cover things like braces. Therefore if a consumer wants to get braces for their child they would have to buy a separate dental plan.

Choosing a Dental Plan

When choosing a plan the consumer should look for one that allows a provider of choice to be chosen and not just one that is within a certain group. Look for one that offers an emergency protocol and one that covers specialist. Research where the premium is going is it toward interest or the main payment and look at the fees for service and compare.

Braces Coverage

An orthodontist can belong to an HMO or a PPO plan and many of them offer payment plans as well as what the insurance covers because most dental insurance braces coverage is 10-30% in many cases. Braces for most insurance companies are considered a cosmetic treatment and that is why it is not usually covered in full. The only time that braces are covered in full is when it is a severe case and the patient’s eating and everyday functions are impaired unless surgery is done and braces are put on. The best way to get the best coverage is to shop around and get quotes. Ask the current dentist for referrals to an orthodontist and ask friends for references.

Conclusion

Even the best insurance policy may not fully cover dental procedures therefore it is a good idea to shop around for the best quotes to ensure that if the need should arise for an orthodontist the family will be prepared. Braces are very expensive and some professionals offer payment plans if the insurance doesn’t cover everything. There is a solution it just has to be researched.
