Deficiencies of Vitamin

February 16, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Health and Fitness

Vitamins are essential towards keeping a healthy body, they are involved in different important functions and most of them are taken via our diet. Not getting enough amounts of vitamins in our body will start depleting our reserves until we start suffering of vitamin deficiency disorders that can be soft or serious depending on the severity of the problem and the type of vitamin we are talking about.

Most people take for granted that they are getting all the needed vitamins from food, however this is not always the case; a deficiency can be triggered by higher nutritional needs (such as the one found in pregnant women and infants) and even by a an inability to proper absorb a vitamin caused by genetic factors, illnesses and even the action of some medications.

A common type of problem is vitamin D deficiency. It is found in some food sources, however we need the rays of the Sun in order to process this vitamin and have adequate levels of it in our bodies. Advertisements and biased information these days makes us look at the Sun as our enemy, when in truth we need its rays to be healthy! Perhaps the ones that suffer most from this problem are children who are prone to develop vitamin d deficiency rickets, a condition that will weaken the bones and muscles and will lead to the development of bowed legs. A similar condition will also occur in adults and elderly patients, with the name of osteomalacia and osteoporosis respectively.

Other common types of deficiency are the ones of vitamin B12 (commonly found in people who follow a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle), vitamin C and vitamin E. In all cases preventing is always a good idea. To check your current vitamin levels, you can get a lab test of your blood.
