Controlling Menopause Symptoms Naturally

June 2, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

When women start the process of menopause, the production of estrogen and progesterone start to decrease. This fluctuation in the hormone levels is what leads to hormone imbalance symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood swings, menopause night sweats, sleeplessness, memory loss and a whole host of other symptoms. Only about half of all women will end up getting menopause symptoms and for the vast majority of those women that do get symptoms the symptoms will not require medical intervention. In the past, the preferred treatment of choice to control menopausal symptoms was hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but due to testing done in the 1990’s by the Women’s Health Initiative this treatment option fell out of favor. Clinical studies showed that the HRT use came with serious health risks such as an increased risk of breast cancer, strokes and heart disease.  HRT did decrease the incidence of colorectal cancer, and bone fractures.

HRT was also very effective in treating a wide range of menopause symptoms, but because of its inherent risks, wide spread use of HRT decreased dramatically. So, this left women scrambling for other solutions to treat their symptoms. Unfortunately there are no quick fix easy solutions.

Here are some natural menopause treatments and lifestyle changes that you can implement that may offer some relief:

Quit smoking. Not only do smokers enter into menopause earlier than non-smokers, but they also have more hot flashes and more intense hot flashes.

Lose weight. Obese women also experience more symptoms.

Manage stress. Not only is stress a killer, but it exacerbates other symptoms.

Make time for sleep. A lack of sleep leads to stress, memory problems, and mood swings.

Exercise. Weight bearing exercises help reduce the risks of osteoporosis. In addition to this it helps promote a reduction in stress levels, helps to maintain a healthy weight and it will help you get a better night’s sleep.
