Choosing Toys for the Techincally Minded Child

Although the idea of gender specific toys has been frowned upon in recent years there is no doubt that some toys are loved more by boys than girls. In this article we’ll look at some toys that tend to be enjoyed more by boys although many girls who are drawn to technology and science may also enjoy them. Perhaps, instead of saying toys for boys we should instead say toys for technology lovers!

One very popular toy that appeal to technology oriented children is Robosapien. This toy is the brainchild of Dr Mark Tilden, a former physicist at NASA who has now introduced Robosapien V2. These are articulated robots that come in two sizes. The full size is 14″ and the mini size is 9″ tall. The full size version comes with over 60 pre-programmed functions that include such actions as walking, dancing, kicking, rapping and many more.They can be programmed by remote control and have fluid gestures and motions that include two walking speeds, arm motions and turning.

Legos are popular with both boys and girls but there are some Lego kits that appeal more to the boys. The Lego Technic range includes kits to make a variety of realistically moving vehicles including excavators, helicopters, tractors and cranes. The Lego Technic Mobile Crane for example has almost 2000 pieces and measures a huge eighteen inches long. It has six wheeled steering, pneumatic cylinders which operate a telescoping boom, a motor and battery box which lower the arm and hook. Intricate to put together and fun to play with this kit will appeal to many technically oriented boys and girls.

Many boys and girls enjoy radio controlled vehicles such as cars, airplanes, helicopters and ships. A reasonably priced RC vehicle can be purchased from as little as $20 and will give hours of fun to your child (and Mum or Dad as well?) Many boys and girls also love to play with walkie talkies. There are many different ones to choose from including those made by Fisher Price (oriented more towards younger children), Transformers and spy gear models. Children will enjoy playing with these and perhaps a set of binoculars to complete their ‘spy kit’.

Many boys also enjoy action figures such as Naruto and Gundam action figures from the anime series, marine action figures and Justice League action figures featuring superheroes.
