Choosing and Using an Infant Car Seat

February 23, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Family and Home

Taking the time to learn how to use a cheap infant car seat will pay dividends down the road as a new parent.  My aim with this article is to make you aware of the basic method for doing so:

Perhaps the most important factor is that your child has the correct head support during your journey.   It’s easy to find a cheap car seat with head bolsters or inserts which will allow the correct support structure for a smaller child’s head and neck.  The industry is always driving forward new advances in infant car seat world and it always pays to check out the current products available on the market to make sure that you are giving your child the best safety.

The next factor is correct use of harness straps, threading them through the provided slots and secure your child to the seat.  In general, the straps should be level with your baby’s shoulders.  Be sure to adjust the harness as your child ages, however, since this process isn’t a simple and set forget kind of thing.  The bottom line is to be sure your child is secured correctly in the harness straps at all times!

You should also consider the tightness of the harness, itself.  The best and easiest way to test out the tightness is to simply put a finger between the harness and your child.  If you can fit more than just the one finger in the gap, then you need to tighten the harness.  Also be sure to secure the harness flatly against your child’s shoulders and thighs.  Finally, double check that the harness clip is flush with the infant’s armpits.

This stuff might seem a little overwhelming at first, but I can assure you that it’s worth learning how to do properly in the first place.  After just a week or so of practice, you’ll be a pro!
