So, you obviously haven’t gone out and bought the chinchilla before you have bought a chinchilla cage or at least I very much hope that you haven’t… So before you actually purchase your cage, or indeed your chinchilla, you need to understand a few of the requirements of the animal, such as chinchilla bedding and a chin’s original habitat. You need to understand its habits and the things that are will keep your chinchilla healthy. One of the most important aspects is that the cage should allow the natural habit of the chinchilla which is climbing and jumping. Although the animals come from a very hardy climate up in the Andes Mountains, they still take some looking after; after all they are going to live in a very small environment.

One of the things that you need to provide inside your chinchilla’s home is some items to stimulate the chinchilla. The chinchilla happens to be very intelligent and need a lot of stimulation in the form of toys. But, there is a caveat here. You cannot just put any old toys inside the cage because you are risking the health of your animal. Let me make this a fairly clear to you, your brand-new chinchilla is a natural chewer, it will chew anything that is placed in front of it, it will try and chew through the bars of the cage, it will try and chew its own feeding bowls, it will chew those little houses that you are going to put into the cage because you think the chinchilla needs a house, and it will definitely chew the little toys that you’re going to buy for it. It is important to stay away from plastic, and buy a wood or wire chinchilla cage. Now, the problem with this is that when the chinchilla chews on anything it also swallows some of the material. Now, you have to think about the material that the toys are made of very carefully because anything that you put inside could damage the chinchilla, such as bits of plastic.

Another important thing that you have to think about before you purchase your chinchilla cage is in the provision of necessary space. Many people purchase parrot cages or indeed ferret cages for their pet chinchilla is because these cages will actually make a brilliant home because the proportions are just about right. There should be a lot of height in the cage in order for the chinchilla to perform some of the acrobatic movements that it likes to perform.
