Challenges of Pike Fly Fishing

While fly fishing for northern pike is a hobby that is gaining a lot of popularity among North American anglers, but there are many challenges to this particular style of angling that has kept some anglers away with reservations.  While some embrace the challenge, there is no question that there are plenty of reasons why pike fly fishing has not taken off the way some other types of fishing have.  Understanding the challenges that come with this hobby may help give you a better idea of whether or not this is for you.

Pike are tough fighters, which is part of the reason that more traditional methods of fishing have dominated when it comes to preferred methods of experienced northern fishermen.  This doesn’t mean that fly fishing isn’t possible, but one of the immediate issues that needs to be addressed is the potential problem with gear.  There isn’t a lot of fly gear designed to handle a 30+ pound fish, and especially one that puts up a fight like a northern pike – one of the few fresh water fish that can put a black bass to shame in terms of fighting experience.

Getting the heaviest fly gear available is an important part of fly fishing for any fish, and pike is no exception.  In addition, the exact fly lures or strategies for making them “skip” on water can differ than the way you would go after trout or walleye – two more common fishing targets for fly anglers.

Another important consideration is that there aren’t many small streams or rivers that have sizable pike, which also means that there simply aren’t as many places where fly fishing for pike makes sense as opposed to the more conventional methods using regular northern pike fishing tips.  However, if you are an angler who likes major challenges, and can deal with the headaches that can sometimes come with it, then maybe this is a hobby worth looking into.
