Ben 10 Cake Decorating Tips
If you need to amaze your child and his friends with a Ben 10 birthday cake at an upcoming party, you have come to the right place for some help. You will need to bake the cake yourself but to add a Ben 10 image to the top follow these simple steps for a professional look.
If you are very artistic then you could just copy the picture onto the cake with icing pens. But the rest of us need a bit more help than that.
Choose your picture
Start by finding an image online and save it down to your hard drive. This could be of Ben himself, or perhaps your child’s favourite alien character. The easiest image though maybe the Omnitrix watch. You then need to play about with it a bit in the Paint software package or any other image editor you may have. The most important thing to do is size it so that it will fit onto your cake perfectly, allowing any room you need to write Happy Birthday or add an age etc. You can then also consider printing the resized image out as a mirror if there is any writing on it or you specifically want it that way around on the cake.
Set up your image
Secure your image onto something flat and cover it with cling film and secure this also so neither the picture nor the plastic can move.
Crack on with the icing
You now have to decide whether you will be working with royal icing or buttercream.
For Royal Icing – make up a thick batch of black icing. Using a narrow tip, outline the picture and then leave to set for half an hour. Make up more icing colored with food dye as necessary so that is has a creamy consistency. Using a thicker icing tip, take one color at a time and fill in the relevant areas of the picture. Butt up to the outline first and then go back and forth to fill the area. Leave the completed picture for 24 hours so that it has set, then carefully lift the cling film and flip it over to place the icing onto the cake.
For Buttercream Icing – follow the steps as for Royal Icing, but when the picture is complete add an extra thick layer of buttercream over the whole thing. This should be in a color to match the cake and should include a border. Freeze the topper until it is firm, invert it onto the cake and peel away the cling film.
So that wasn’t so bad was it? If you can keep a steady hand whilst icing, you should have a great iced image to use as a Ben 10 cake topper.
