Antique Gold Jewelry Is Part of History

July 14, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Uncategorized

You can say all you want about antique gold jewelry, but the one thing that holds true over everything else is the history behind the piece. But what makes a gold jewelry piece “antique” as opposed to just regular gold jewelry? In order for something to be an antique it must pass a few tests. One of those tests is time. But time is not the only variable because if that was all that mattered then we could simply buy our gold jewelry, put it under our mattress for 50 years and then call it antique. Unfortunately, antique jewelry does not work that way. In addition to time, an antique has to be a part of a time period that has a beginning and an end. It also has to be a marked period in history.

To illustrate an example of antique gold jewelry, let’s look at the sinking of Titanic in 1912. The Titanic sank  at 2:20 am on April 15th 1912, having collided with an iceberg about three hours beforehand. For the sake of our antique jewelry definition, this marks a definite period in time. It also has a beginning and an end because the voyage of Titanic began on April 10th and ended April 15th. And of course, the sinking of Titanic has become an important, yet tragic event in history.

But how does one value antique gold jewelry? Finding out how much a piece of antique gold jewelry is worth is not very complicated. You can go on the web and find out exactly what you have and see if you can find something comparable. Of course, you will need to find more than one because you can’t exactly value something based on just one comparable. But if you can’t find a match for you antique gold jewelry piece based on this method, you might have to resort to an appraiser.
