February 3, 2010 | Author: Admin | Filed under: Baseball,Recreation and Sports

It used to be that if you saw a batting cage in someone’s backyard that one of the first things that went through your mind was that it must have cost a fortune to build. Or, another thought may have been that those folks really take baseball very seriously. Well, in today’s market, that is not necessarily the case. Through increased competition and price points dropping, batting cages are more affordable than ever with the average family being able to afford one.

It is not uncommon to see some sort of playground set in most neighborhood backyards. If you learn how to build a batting cage then start shopping for used equipment and buying materials from your local home improvement store, you can keep your costs in the range of a nice wooden playground set.

Start by looking for a used net. Try your local classifieds first as there may be someone trying to sale theirs. Another option would be to go around to the various schools and organizations in your area. Maybe they are upgrading what they have to a new updated model. Lastly, try online at places like eBay and Craigslist. If you are unable to find a used net, you may need to consider buying a new one.

Next, you will want to consider the batting cage frame. Most kits and frame sets that are online feature steel tubing as the material of choice. However, in an effort to keep costs low, your best bet is to use 4 x 4 treated wood posts. They can be found at your local home improvement store and is very cost effective.

Finally, be sure to take into account the other materials that will be required in order to construct the cage. You’ll need concrete for cementing the posts in place as well as eye hooks and clips which will be used to hang the net. Even with the cost of the materials, you’ll still be able to build a very nice batting cage for a fraction of the cost of a professionally manufactured kit.
