A Few Memories on Christmas Greetings
Yes it’s that time of year again when we begin to think about the festive season. Before we bring the box full of precious memories from the attic we have to get out the address book. Christmas greetings are very important, it’s how we let the people in our lives know their special place, and also a way of keeping contact with relatives and friends who have somehow gone off our radar.
Christmas greeting cards are the traditional way to share our thoughts and feelings, or just to let someone know that whilst we may not be a focal point in their lives we are still there. The range of Christmas greetings today seems endless, with all varieties from traditional religious themes, contemporary religious themes, snowy themes, huddling penguins, humorous, or down right rude.
You will know which Christmas greetings to choose for which family member or close friend. Perhaps like me you learnt through your errors? In the wild abandon of youth I posted Granny a card really only suitable for a friend. I can recall the letter my mother wrote to me at my University halls of residence exclaiming her horror. That was a christmas greeting of a different kind, but an important lesson was learnt. Of course Granny loved me anyway and upon reflection it was probably my mother who was the most horrified.
The hours I have spent with the children around the table scissors and glue in hand as we cut up last years christmas greeting card, sprinkling glitter that seemed to still be showing itself the following July. What a fun way to amuse the children, the pinking shears giving the zigzag effect as the present labels were churned out.
The christmas card greetings could be recycled too as long as they were in the correct place. I remember the tears of disappointment when the carefully cut out picture was turned over to reveal a half a printed sentence, or the spidery scrawl of. Uncle Tony. So much of the pleasure of Christmas is the fun the children have from making paper chains and christmas greeting cards.
As we contemplate the coming festive season Christmas greetings will occupy our thoughts. Christmas is a time for giving and re connecting, often across the miles in this modern age, when families are not all living close to one another. It does not have to be about spending all your hard earned cash. A little thought and a sprinkling of glitter was all we needed.
